NANNIE ELIZABETH GRIFFIN-BROOKS-HOLLOWAY FAMILY

by

Francis William Griffin, great-nephew

Nannie was born June 25, 1907, in Lovejoy, Henry County Georgia, the fifth of eight children born to Albert and Maude Griffin.

Sometime around late 1923 or early 1924, Nannie  married Jewell Hogan Brooks and started a family in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Jewell was born in Ramhurst, Murray County, Georgia, on June 3, 1903. Jewell was known as the 'peddler' in the area of east Atlanta known as "Cabbagetown". He gained this nickname because he was a fruit and vegetable peddler.

Things did not work out for Nannie and Jewell and sometime before his death, they parted company by divorce. Jewell later died in 1959 of Myocardial Infarction and was buried at Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Fulton County, Georgia.

The children of Jewell and Nannie were:

Jewell Hogan Brooks, Jr.      1924-1981 James Lewis Brooks                  1928-1991
Ted Oscar Brooks                  1931-1939 Charles Edward Brooks, Sr.      1933-
Jean Brooks                            1935-1999 Bonnie B. Brooks                        1937-
Joyce Brooks                          1939-1939 Joy Brooks                                   1939-1939
Frank Marvin Brooks, Sr.       1940-

Nannie found love and companionship again when she met and married Gene Carl Holloway, Sr., whom we all knew as "Slim". Slim was born October 28, 1924.

Nannie and Slim made their home in Douglasville, Georgia for many years. It was here they added to their family by adopting. I am listing the children of Nannie and Slim as I know them and with the information I have available. I welcome any corrections and will make the changes accordingly when received.

Due to the living status of the children of Gene and Nannie, they are not listed here to protect their privacy.  They and other generations of descendants are available upon request.

When Nannie's mother Maude became unable to care for herself, Nannie took her into her home in Douglasville, Georgia and cared for her until she died in 1968. Nannie had evidently purchased a next door lot from Maude and built a home for week end and summer use. When Maude passed away, Nannie evidently inherited the old Griffin home place in Ellijay so she and Slim moved there permanently with their youngest child, Tony. The rest of their children were grown and remained in the Douglasville area. Tony still lives in Ellijay today at the Holloway home place.

On January 26, 1985, death called on the Holloway household and Nannie answered. She was buried next to her first husband, Jewell Brooks, in the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Fulton County, Georgia.

On May 18, 2001, Slim passed away from lung cancer and was buried in Ellijay, Georgia at the Turniptown Baptist Church Cemetery where all of the George Griffin family members are buried.
